Spinal cord injuries range from bruises to paralysis
Although medical science has advanced in its treatment of spinal cord injuries, dramatic breakthroughs in improved patient function and diminished disability have not occurred.
Spinal cord injuries may be a short-term loss of sensation or function such as in a spinal cord bruise. Some spinal cord bruises will resolve without long term disability; in more severe spinal cord bruises the victim will have permanent deficits.
A more severe injury can cause paralysis or loss of sensation or function in the arms or legs. Paraplegia is paralysis in the legs. That can occur with severe trauma to the lower back. Quadriplegia is paralysis or loss of use in the arms and legs. This can occur in a severe injury to the neck or mid back.
Motor vehicle collisions, truck collisions, and motorcycle collisions are some of the most common causes of these catastrophic injuries.
